WELLNESS ONCOLOGY & HEMATOLOGY
Breast cancer is an overwhelmingly common cancer diagnosis in women but the term covers several different types of cancer. The most common types are various forms of invasive breast cancer which are usually diagnosed following a self-exam that detects a lump or a mammogram that shows a change in the breast tissue. A less common type is inflammatory breast cancer and it does not usually result in a detectable lump or change on a mammogram. Instead, this type of cancer results in changes to the skin of the breast or the nipple and is diagnosed by biopsy. Although less common, invasive or inflammatory breast cancer can and does occasionally develop in men.
Caused by a cancerous (malignant) tumor that forms in the cells of the breast, breast cancer may be extremely aggressive, or slow growing. Breast cancer may develop in any part of the breast, and lie dormant for years before symptoms arise. Some types of breast cancer may be linked to genetic tendencies which make it important to understand your risks based on family history.
As medical oncologists, Dr. Shaye, Dr. Lashkari, and Dr. Ho know that a diagnosis of breast cancer can be terrifying. Fortunately, more and more treatment options to successfully stop the spread of breast cancer are becoming available on a continuous basis and research based on clinical trials offers innovative and emerging treatments.
Early detection and treatment is incredibly important, providing the greatest chance for a full recovery from breast cancer. Regular mammograms after age 40, monthly self-exams for any changes in the breast including lumps, tenderness or appearance and regular breast examinations performed by a doctor are the keys to early detection.
